The name of the trophy is actually the Academy Award of Merit, but it's known as an Oscar. No one really knows why, but there's a theory that a librarian and later executive director for the academy noted that the statuette resembled her uncle named Oscar. The nickname wasn't officially associated with the trophy until 1939.

The first Academy Awards were held at a private dinner at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel with an audience of about 270 people. Today, it’s one of the most prestigious and widely viewed entertainment awards globally.
